Snellville Historical Society
Our History, Our Heritage
Welcome to the
Snellville Historical Society
“We welcome you to Snellville, with her great Oaks and Pines, and think a greater country town would be mighty hard to find, we are not rich and mighty, but we try to do the will of God and live it every day.”
-Circa 1930 from Gladstone F. Snell, first Mayor of Snellville
How we do it:
The society serves as the keeper of Snellville’s memory—documenting the town’s transformation from Creek Indian territory to a colonial trading post (founded by Tom Snell and James Sawyer in the 1870s), then into the lively city it is today
How we do it:
The Snellville Historical Society is committed to preserving, educating, and archiving the rich history of Snellville. Home to the city’s only historical archival collection, we serve as a vital resource for those interested in exploring our local heritage. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, we depend on private donations to supplement our membership support. Through the generosity of individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners, we are able to keep Snellville’s history alive and accessible for both current and future generations.
Why Becoming a Member is Important
Membership in the Snellville Historical Society plays a vital role in safeguarding the cultural and historical heritage of our community. By supporting the Society, members contribute to the preservation of historical records, artifacts, and landmarks, while also advancing educational programming for residents of all ages. Membership strengthens community identity, fosters civic pride, and ensures that the legacy of Snellville is preserved and accessible for generations to come.
-Celebrating our history. Protecting our heritage.
